Deep in the mountains of Peru, there is a dead
city- the city of Machu Picchu. Hundreds of years
ago, the Incas built the city high up of a mountain.
It had many nice buildings, streets, and stairs. A
road went down the mountain, starting at the top
and ending at the main road below.

About 400 years ago, the Inca Empire fell.
The people left Machu Picchu. Slowly, plants and
trees grew and covered the area. The great city
disappeared.

Many years later, in 1911, an American explorer
found Machu Picchu again. Now, it is a popular
place to visit in South America. The streets and
buildings are once again full of people. This time,
they are all tourists!
